The harsh reality of Eggs

Lately I have been presented with a lot of people who think that eating eggs are good for them and that no one dies for an egg. The amount of people that realize meat isn’t good for us and go vegetarian but have no idea the health and ethical concerns that lie in the vegetarian foods they eat is crazy. I was one of them, for Seven years before I found information and educated myself. Lets make the changes alot easier with the right information and spread the word. We must be the change we want to see in the world. We must open eyes!

I want to discuss eggs today and all concerns that apply to buying and consuming eggs. Oh where to begin, lets start with one of the largest egg recalls back in 2010 over half a billion eggs were recalled for salmonella poisoning and when you hear that 220 million eggs are consumed in America everyday that seems like a lot of potentially affected humans. More then 100,000 Americans are poisoned with salmonella tainted eggs each year. I know a lot of people that think salmonella isn’t that big of a health concern but it really is and in some cases can be fatal.  Salmonella infections can be very serious, even life-threatening, especially to the very young, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Infected people may experience but are not limited to, diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting. Some infected people may suffer from severe illness, arthritis, or even death. Eggs can become contaminated on the farm because a laying hen can become infected with salmonella and pass the bacteria into the egg before it is laid. If the egg is not refrigerated, the bacteria can grow inside the uncracked, whole egg.

Cholesterol is another major health concern from eggs. Eggs are the single largest source of cholesterol in the American diet. One egg has as much cholesterol as a Hardee’s Thickburger. And although it’s true that dietary cholesterol doesn’t have much of an effect on blood cholesterol levels (only about a 10% increase) there are other reasons to avoid dietary cholesterol.
The problem is the pro-inflammatory and oxidative effects dietary cholesterol has been shown to have on your LDL. This in turn can damage the endothelium (the lining inside our arteries) and increase cardiovascular effects. Eggs have been reported in recent research to be the new cigarettes. 3-4 eggs a week can have major negative effects on atherosclerosis (a major risk determiner in strokes and heart disease). Atherosclerosis is a hardening of the arteries, mainly the carotid artery in the neck. The hardening can sometimes dislodge itself and thats how you get strokes. We should avoid eggs as much as possible if not all together.

17 million people die prematurely every year from lifestyle/diet related cardiovascular disease. Doesn’t that seem like a lot of people to be prematurely dying because of the food we are brainwashed to believe is good for us. I think its insane that when actually trying to come up with a marketing campaign there was a list of back and forth emails from the egg industry and the FDA because the egg industry kept trying to use words like nutritious or anything referring to nutrition and the FDA stated back and forth that they could not use the word nutritious when describing eggs. The emails also went on after the egg industry tried to use the words safe and healthy. The FDA states that all references to safe, healthy and nutritious must be removed when describing eggs. They couldn’t use the words SAFE, HEALTHY and NUTRITIOUS !!! What doesn’t that seem a little ridiculous that they are not allowed to use these words but then they can still spin it around with other words to try and convince people that its good for them. Even risks of diabetes increase with one egg a week, a 76% increase! All I have to say is that when you find an article that is saying a bunch of good about eggs, please do your research behind who funded the article or research and who is writing it as well. Don’t just believe everything you read. So many of these companies are highly skilled in marketing so be ware. Watch this video on eggs (the email to the FDA is in this one).

Now moving onto the welfare issues in the egg industry. So many people like to believe that hens just lay eggs anyways whats the harm in taking their eggs, Well of course leave it up to our cruel world to once again find a way to torture living beings and sugar coat the truth. The harm and cruelty for the chickens is full or torture, because of their small size they are usually man handled by the bundle (usually 3-4 at a time by their legs and smashed face first into tiny cramped cages. They are packed so tight that they can’t even move their wings. Before they are put in cages they have their claws and beaks seared off (its one of their most sensitive body parts) and causes endless suffering that may not go away for the rest of their lives. Also people are not aware of this but male chicks are considered useless in the industry because they don’t get as large as the female and obviously do not hold the same reproductive capabilities of a hen. 50 % of chicks born are male and the baby male chicks usually only ONE DAY OLD are sifted through by workers and tossed either into a large grinder and grinded up ALIVE or into a large plastic bag to suffocate and die, all AS BABIES!! how wrong is that! It makes me so mad to think how awfully disconnected our world is and how many people have no idea and don’t care. Another thing people don’t realize is that back in the 1900’s an average hen layed about 83 eggs a year. They usually lay one egg a day but not every day and it was and is different for different types. Now in a factory farm the hens lay around 300 eggs and are killed after their second laying cycle. The killing is done in cruel unthinkable manors like dunking the live birds in scolding hot waters all while fully conscious and have their throats slit and left to die excruciating pain. Please  don’t think you are off the hook if you buy “free range”, “cage free”, “all natural”, “grass fed” etc these terms hold very little meaning in this industry. Typically the eggs industry can say the term “free range” if the birds have access to a hole in the wall where they can see a bit of light.etc. Its all extremely well done marketing from professionals and to be honest a bunch of lies. Watch this little video.

Egg whites are just protein and you can get all the protein you need from vegan sources that are healthier. Egg yolks do contain some healthy fats and fat-soluble nutrients, but they can also be sourced from a vegan diet. Specifically, Omega 3 fatty acids are found in walnuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, and to a certain extent even in greens . Saturated fat can be obtained from coconuts. Vitamin A is produced by the body from beta-carotene, which is found in carrots and in greens; eating a little fat with your salad from time to time ensures proper absorption of beta-carotene, but a lot of fat is not required for absorption. On an high carb vegan diet, your body becomes very efficient in general, including with respect to absorbing nutrients. Other vitamins and minerals found in the egg are also found in vegan sources.Eggs are sticky and clogging, and they slow down digestion, making it harder to maintain a high-fruit diet. Egg whites should be avoided entirely, though, as they are are particularly clogging and hard to digest.
If you feel you need more fat, it’s better to have vegan fat, as it is less clogging to the physical and energetic body. I always say you can get everything you need from a vegan diet, taste included you just have to find the right sources. Its actually a matter of getting your nutrients directly from the sources oppose to through someone else’s body. Eggs, milk or meat!

Its time to really understand that where you spend your money matters. When you buy eggs you are unfortunately paying for and supporting cruelty. People like to think that the production needs to stop and the demand will stop but its the other way around. The demand needs to stop for the production to stop. We need to realize that we can make a stand against all these powerful companies, we can stand for what is right and we all know that this cruelty is truly wrong.
